The Library continues to need your help

In Fiscal Year 2008, the Library budget was reduced by $20,900. Thanks to your generosity, we are within $500 of our goal of raising $20,000 to make up for the cuts to our book budget.

Thank you for showing such strong support and appreciation for your library!

The Fiscal Year 2009 budget will be almost as tight. There are many ways to show your support, through volunteering, donations of books, and financial contributions. We thank you deeply, for all of it.

New in Local History

Ada Brewster's Wild West

This month’s exhibit features sketches of the wild west from the 1860’s to the 1880’s, drawn by Kingston native, artist and adventurer Ada Brewster.

Born in Kingston in 1842, Ada Brewster began sketching as a child, then used her talent to document the people and places she encountered as she traveled extensively around the country. At different times, she lived in Kansas, California, Florida, New York and Georgia. She worked as a nurse in Rhode Island during the Civil War and at the mint in Carson City, Nevada, in the 1870s, but she always returned to art, either teaching or producing. Ada returned to Kingston in 1919 and lived in her family home “Woodside” until her death in 1929.

Ada criss-crossed the continent during a time of tremendous change, when territories became states, settlers populated the plains and railroads replaced wagon trains. As her drawings show, she saw cowboys, Native Americans and Chinese, exotic individuals doing extraordinary things in amazing landscapes. Her pencil captured the wildness and her drawings convey the wonders of her journey to us more than a century later.
